It’s a vital, fascinating record of both individual and collective creativity, one that can reflect and transcend time and culture. The Department of Art provides students with historical and critical understanding of art coupled with the experience of interdisciplinary artistic practice. Our students examine art globally and across time, and work with new media along with established studio traditions. Our dynamic curriculum provides opportunities integrating art history and criticism with art practice. The Department collaborates across the College. We partner with faculty in Chemical Engineering, Neuroscience, Film and Media Studies, and Civil Engineering, with whom we offer a program in Architectural Studies. The Major With a combined studio/art history course sequence, students may concentrate in an area of interest. Students work closely with departmental faculty as well as visiting artists, and are prepared for work in art-related fields as well as graduate study. Williams Center for the Arts, Printmaking Studio/Experimental Printmaking Institute, and Williams Visual Arts Building. Learn more about our facilities Honors Program For especially committed students, pursuing honors in art history or studio is a one-year intensive study into the history, practice and/or theory of art making. Honors candidates receive one on one mentoring from a faculty member that culminates in a thesis paper or a year-end exhibition in our state of the art Grossman Gallery. Opportunities The art community surrounding Lafayette guarantees exciting internships and apprenticeships. Distinctive programs such as the Rothkopf Scholars Trip and Save Venice internships are an integral part of the curriculum. Lafayette’s location means field trips to museums in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., that offer experiential learning. Grossman ’64 and his wife, Rissa W., to provide opportunities for intensive interaction between students and major artists.
